I planted cobra beans for the first time this spring and I started them indoors by planting the seeds. Then gradually they were moved outdoors to their final position in the raised beds but unfortunately they didn’t do well. So I planted the next batch of seeds straight into raised beds outdoors in May and these have simply thrived, climbing the wigwam of bamboo canes and string for support!

Nasturtiums which were planted in the corner of this raised bed made great companion plants as they attracted all the black fly away from the beans and were fantastic at inviting so many bees. The nasturtiums were also planted from seed and they were very easy to grow. Next year, I must remember to plant these two companions together again, as they’ve been such a success!
From this happy raised bed then, came several great harvests of cobra beans that have been such a joy to harvest.
There is one characteristic that is very special about cobra beans and that is the magical colour of the podded beans. Absolutely awesome as you reveal the beans from their pods!
A great harvest of podded beans can only mean transforming them into a hearty spicy stew using onions, tomatoes, fresh ginger, homegrown chillies and a little seasoning. Just a small squeeze of lime, a sprinkle of coriander and a delicious bean stew is ready to enjoy, yum!
